Chapter 17

Cassie woke with a shiver. As the sharp sensation crept along her spine, a chill in the air threatened to summon another. She pulled the blanket that covered her higher up to her neck, which only allowed the tips of her toes to slip out from under the other end.

“It’s freezing!”

Cassie swung her feet over the edge of the bed and winced as they hit the cold, wooden slats. With the blanket still clasped tight at her neck, she shuffled toward the thermostat.

“Great.” She sighed, tapping the screen of the thermostat, which still refused to change. “I guess it makes sense that the heat would break down during a cold snap.” She stepped over to the window that overlooked her backyard and the field at the edge of her property line.

White stretched out in all directions. Her heart pounded at the sight of it.

“Snow? How is this possible? No thermostat and it’s snowing?” She shivered again, then walked over to her dresser. As she rummaged through it for warm clothes she wondered why the weather forecast hadn’t said a thing about snow. It didn’t snow often in Little Leaf Creek, and she doubted that it would be met with too much enthusiasm. Especially, since now it had snowed two years in a row. It wouldn’t make searching for clues any easier, either.

Cassie layered a few shirts and tugged a sweater on top of them. By the time she made it over to Tessa’s, she felt stiff from the layers of clothing, and her nose still froze in the icy air.

“Can you believe this mess?” Tessa pushed open the door for her. “I had to bring the goats in last night. They say they’ll be fine in their house, but I couldn’t leave them out there in this. Harry even piled into bed with me.”

“I don’t think anyone was expecting this.” Cassie knocked some snow off of her shoes before she stepped across the threshold. “I think it might cause some problems in our investigation.” She accepted a cup of coffee from Tessa, then proceeded to fill her in on the encounter in the parking lot the night before.

“Do you think that the man who was waiting for Mirabel could have been involved in Meryl’s murder?” Tessa had a sip of coffee.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure how it could all connect back to Mirabel. But you know her ex-husband’s history isn’t squeaky clean.” Cassie sighed. “I’m afraid nothing is any clearer today than it was yesterday.”

“Hopefully, some of the reports from the crime scene will start coming back today and give us some clarity.” Tessa peered out through the kitchen window. “And hopefully it won’t snow again.”

The shrill ring of Cassie’s cell phone made her jump. She fished it out of her purse.

“It’s Ollie.” Cassie put the call on speakerphone and set the phone down in the middle of the table. “Hi Ollie, I’m here with Tessa. Do you have some news for us?”

“I wish I could say that the case is solved, but it hasn’t been just yet.
